A co-operative of ordinary people built on integrity and equality, they are a worker co-op, a business owned and run by the nearly 200 people who work there. They don’t have any bosses or shareholders. Suma’s employees, set the direction of the business. Everyone has an equal say in what they do. They all get paid the same wage, take responsibility and each do a range of jobs each week, from truck driving to cooking to accounts.

Established in 1982, Wigan Wholefoods has always been a family-run business. With a health food sales background, Husband and wife duo, Tony and Susan Hodgson, decided to go it alone and began the story of Wigan Wholefoods.
Whilst raising a young family and with little resources, Tony created a workspace in his garage at the rear of his property using only a new bath tub and a set of scales as his working equipment and from those humble beginnings, Tony and Sue never looked back.
Quickly the business expanded, as did the premises and the workforce and in the summer of 1999, David, Son of Tony and Sue, and best friend Paul, started a summer job working at the warehouse and they never left!
Fast forward to December 2015, after losing our special Susan, Tony retired leaving his years of knowledge and experience to David and his wife, Natalie. Wigan Wholefoods Limited was born, as was our new slogan “New vines from strong roots”.
Between our staff we now have over 100 years of experience in the wholefoods business and have never ever let go of those humble beginnings.
